An IP rating tells you how well a light fixture’s enclosure resists the entry of solid objects and water. The first digit concerns access and dust; the second concerns water. A higher number can mean more protection in that one category, but it does not automatically mean a light is suitable for every bathroom, exposed garden wall, or outdoor electrical installation.
For practical selection, match the rating to the actual exposure: occasional indoor splashes, regular rain, cleaning with a hose, fine dust, or possible immersion. Then check the fixture instructions and confirm that the proposed location and installation comply with current local electrical rules. Bathrooms and outdoor circuits can have additional requirements beyond an IP code.
How IP ratings for lights work
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The common format is two digits after the letters IP, such as IP20, IP44, IP54, IP65, or IP67.
- First digit: protection against access to hazardous parts and solid foreign objects, including dust.
- Second digit: protection against water entering the enclosure.
Read the two digits separately. An IP65 fitting is not simply “better” than IP44 in every respect; it has a different, higher stated level of protection in both categories. Equally, a strong water rating says nothing by itself about corrosion resistance, UV stability, impact resistance, finish quality, or whether the mounting and cable connections are protected.
The first digit: solid objects and dust
The first digit commonly ranges from 0 to 6.

The second digit: water protection
The water digit ranges from 0 to 9, though 0 through 7 are the ratings most often seen on residential lighting.

“Waterproof” is often used loosely in product listings. The IP code is more useful because it identifies the kind of water exposure the enclosure is rated to withstand. An IP67 light, for example, is tested for temporary immersion, but that does not mean it is automatically suitable for permanent underwater use, a pool environment, or any location with special electrical rules.
What does IP44 mean on a light?
An IP44 light is protected against small solid objects and against splashing water from any direction. In plain terms, it is often appropriate for locations with occasional splashes or sheltered outdoor exposure, provided the manufacturer allows that use.
IP44 is frequently seen on bathroom wall lights, vanity lights, and covered exterior fixtures. It can be a practical rating for a light near—but not directly in—the wettest part of a room. However, an IP44 rating is not a universal approval for bathroom placement. Bathroom zones, distances, ceiling heights, the type of shower or bath, and local rules may affect what is allowed, so confirm the current requirements that apply where you live.
What an IP65 light rating means
An IP65 light rating means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against water jets. This makes IP65 a common choice for more exposed outdoor lighting, garages, workshops, and fittings where rain, dust, or occasional wash-down are realistic concerns.
It is useful to distinguish water jets from immersion. IP65 does not mean the light can be submerged. If a ground light sits in a location that floods, or a fitting may be below standing water, an IP65 rating alone does not answer the question. You need to assess the likely conditions and follow the manufacturer’s specific installation guidance.
Common light IP ratings at a glance
IP20: dry interior spaces
IP20 is usually suited to ordinary dry rooms: bedrooms, living rooms, dining spaces, and dry areas of a hallway. It has no stated water protection, so do not treat it as suitable merely because it is high on a bathroom wall or beneath an outdoor roof.
IP44: splashes and sheltered damp locations
IP44 can suit lights exposed to occasional splashing, condensation, or weather that is moderated by a substantial cover. It is often considered for bathroom fittings outside the most exposed areas and for covered porches. Check the instructions: the rating applies to the fixture as designed and installed, not necessarily to altered cable entries, damaged seals, or an open cover.
IP54: dust protection plus splashes
IP54 is dust protected rather than dust-tight, and it resists splashing water. It may make sense in a dusty garage, utility room, or protected outdoor location where direct jets of water are not expected.
IP65: exposed outdoor and dusty areas
IP65 is a stronger all-round choice where a fixture faces rain, airborne dust, and direct water from routine cleaning or wind-driven weather. It is common for exterior wall lights, security lights, and some garage fittings.
IP67: temporary immersion conditions
IP67 indicates dust-tight construction and protection during temporary immersion under specified conditions. This may be relevant to certain landscape or ground-installed products, but it should not be used as a shortcut for deciding whether a fitting is suitable near a pool, fountain, pond, or flood-prone area. Those applications need product-specific guidance and may involve additional safety requirements.
Choosing an outdoor light IP rating
For outdoor lights, start with exposure rather than assuming that “outside” always means the same thing.
- Covered entry or deep porch: The fitting may receive only occasional wind-blown rain, but still needs a rating suitable for the manufacturer’s stated outdoor use.
- Open wall, gate, or garden structure: Rain and dust are more likely. An IP65-rated fitting is often worth considering where the fixture is truly exposed.
- Path, deck, or ground-level lighting: Consider rain, irrigation, puddles, lawn equipment, and whether water can collect around the fitting.
- Coastal or harsh-weather locations: Salt, UV exposure, temperature changes, and corrosion can shorten a fixture’s life even where its IP rating appears adequate.
An IP rating assesses ingress, not every form of outdoor durability. Look separately for the manufacturer’s stated environmental suitability, material, finish, cable-entry arrangement, operating limits, and maintenance instructions. A fitting can be water-resistant yet develop problems if its seals, fasteners, or finish are not suited to the environment.
Alongside weather protection, consider layout, glare, mounting height, and how the light will affect people approaching the property after dark.
IP rating for bathroom lights: important limits
Bathrooms create a mix of splash risk, steam, condensation, and proximity to electrical equipment. An IP rating matters, but it is only one part of selecting a bathroom light.
Do not choose solely by a general statement such as “IP44 is fine for bathrooms.” The appropriate rating can change substantially depending on whether the fitting is near a basin, above a bath, within a shower area, or well away from direct water. Rules also vary by country and can change over time.
Before buying or fitting a bathroom light, verify:
- The manufacturer permits the fixture’s intended bathroom location.
- The fixture’s IP rating suits the expected water exposure.
- Local bathroom-zone and electrical-installation requirements.
- Whether the mounting position, electrical connection, and circuit protection need professional assessment.
If you are changing fixed wiring, installing a new circuit, or are uncertain about a wet-area location, use a qualified electrician familiar with current local requirements.
Mistakes to avoid
Assuming a higher IP number covers everything
A higher rating can provide more ingress protection, but it does not establish suitability for all environments. It does not confirm resistance to salt air, chemicals, UV degradation, physical impact, or poor drainage.
Ignoring the weaker digit
IP45 and IP54 are not interchangeable. The first has different solid-object protection; the second has different water protection. Read both digits before comparing fixtures.
Treating IP44 as an all-purpose outdoor rating
IP44 may be appropriate for a sheltered location, but a fully exposed façade or an area cleaned with a hose can call for a more robust approach. Follow the fixture’s stated use conditions.
Forgetting the installation details
A fixture only performs as intended when its seals, gaskets, covers, glands, and cable entries are correctly assembled. A missing gasket, damaged lens, unused opening left unsealed, or incorrect cable entry can undermine the enclosure protection.
Confusing an IP rating with bathroom-zone approval
The IP code describes enclosure protection. It does not replace checking the applicable bathroom-zone rules, product instructions, or installation requirements.
A simple selection checklist
Before choosing a light, ask:
- Is the location dry, occasionally splashed, regularly rained on, hosed down, dusty, or liable to flood?
- Will the fitting be covered, exposed, or close to a source of direct water?
- Does the first digit provide enough protection from dust and debris for the location?
- Does the second digit address the actual water exposure, rather than a vague idea of “weatherproofing”?
- Is the product expressly intended for indoor, bathroom, or outdoor use as relevant?
- Are local rules or a qualified electrician needed before installation?
The right IP rating is the one that matches realistic exposure and the fitting’s instructions—not simply the highest number on the box.
